What is the Difference Between Prophecy and Divination?

By Richard Wilkins

What is the difference between prophecy and divination? In simple terms, a prophet relies on mystical powers to make themselves and their intentions known, while a medium uses tools and age-old traditions. In defining exactly what is the difference between prophecy and divination, we must also keep two things in mind. Both acts are of divine, or mystical, origin, and both are attempts to foresee events which are unknowable by any conventional means.

What is the difference between prophecy and divination in relation to religion? We can look to religious writings, for examples of prophets, but must take note that many religions take an ill view of any other claims of contact by cosmic forces. Prophets commonly went into the desert, or climbed a high mountain. This is such common description that we have popular stereotypes of wise men who live on mountain peaks and offer guidance. Aside from this seclusion, a prophet may go without food or water. They may or may not pray, depending on how closely they are in touch with God.

What is the difference between prophecy and divination using the Tarot? For a reader, medium, or seer, a session usually begins with a precise conflict or situation, and information concerning that subject is sought. The Tarot has been a popular divination tool for hundreds of years. The reader analyzes each card's meaning, and applies that meaning to the needs of the querent. To do this, the reader must not only know the meanings of the cards, but must align themselves with powerful energy sources that fill the universe, as well. In essence, a Tarot reading is more of an attunement to psychic forces, and interpreting the physical evidence returned by those forces.

What is the difference between prophecy and divination is generally broken down into two groups. Those who use tools to gain information from mystical sources, and those who allow a godly source to visit them and make random information available. A prophet has little hope of helping the querent resolve problems in a relationship, because he or she is not attuned to the situation or the querent in any way. A reader uses cards, stones, or other artifacts and facilitates information passing between the divination tools and the subject of the reading. What is the difference between prophecy and divination can be defined as the difference between using tools to complete a job, and doing the job bare-handed.
