What's Your Sign?

By Stefanie Stiles

If you feel inspired or intrigued by the stars and planets, you may have some interest in astrology and the zodiac signs. Some people read their horoscope to see what's in store for the day, but there's much more to astrology than that.

The official definition of astrology is: The study of the positions and aspects of celestial bodies in the belief that they have an influence on the course of natural earthly occurrences and human affairs. The word zodiac is Greek, meaning "Circle of Animals".

There are twelve signs of the zodiac. They are: Aries- March 21 to April 19, Taurus- April 20 to May 20, Gemini-May 21 to June 20, Cancer-June 21 to July 22, Leo - July 23 to August 22, Virgo - August 23 to September 22, Libra - September 23 to October 22, Scorpio - October 23 to November 21, Sagittarius - November 22 to December 21, Capricorn - December 22 to January 19, Aquarius- January 20 to February 18, and Pisces - February 19 to March 20.

There are four elements of astrology. They are Fire, Earth, Air and Water.

The Fire Signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. The people under these signs tend to be self motivated, inspirational and always mindful of the future.

The Earth Signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. The earth element's influence makes these folks materialistic in a good way for the most part. They tend to be practical and conservative.

The Air Signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. These people are "people" oriented and get along well with others. They're usually quite intelligent and communicative.

The Water Signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. The water element makes people under this sign intuitive, emotional and sensitive to the world around them.

As you can see, each sign has it's own personality traits. In addition to this, there is a color, animal, star stone (not to be confused with a birth stone), and planet to represent each sign as well.

For an example, we will use Aries. March 21st is the beginning of the new zodiacal year and spring equinox. Aries, the first sign, is therefore that of new beginnings. The Aries planet is Mars, the animal is the ram, the stone is a diamond and the color of choice for an Aries, is red. Some traits of an Aries is adventurous, ambitious, impulsive, enthusiastic and full of energy. Also, some astrologists go as far as noting potential health concerns for people under each sign.

There is much more information available about the zodiac and astrology that I haven't even began to discuss. You can learn what signs are compatible for romance or friendships and even by t-shirts and gifts with your sign on them. No matter what your interest level in astrology and the zodiac, it's a fun way to take a look into your future.
