Welcome to the dark side of stand-up magic

Welcome to the dark side of stand-up magic

Things have moved on since Paul Daniels' toupee was the funniest thing in magic. Though not the likeliest of bedfellows, the combination of conjuring and comedy is a big trend at this year's Fringe, with Jerry Sadowitz, Barry And Stuart and Pete Firman just three of the acts who have been baffling punters while raising laughs.

Magic, once the home of cheese and shazam, is cool again. It's also dark, dirty and disturbing. Jesus might have been a kick-ass magician, but this latest crop of thaumaturgists are the devil's work.
