The Significance of the Number 23

By Christopher Murray

The number 23 has always been a special number in numerology, but it was really only known to a few conspiracy theorists until the Jim Carrey movie about the subject came out last year. The movie discussed the Discordian fascination with the idea that everything that happens on earth and in all of existence is somehow related to the number 23. However, some skeptics would say that this idea has been stretched a little far by some numerology enthusiasts.

Discordia is a rather rare religion that is based on the study of random events and numbers. The number 23 is sacred in religion because it belongs to a Greek Goddess named Eris. She is the Goddess of Chaos and her followers practice a form of ritual worship called chaos magick.

The number 23 has been studied by many great metaphysicists, including Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson who wrote three books about the number. The number is seen by these authors as being the key to illumination and they also claim that major shifts in collective consciousness and world events can be seen in each cycle of 23 years.

The number 23 is one of the most commonly prime numbers. A prime number is one that can only be divided by it and one. Twenty-three is the lowest prime that consists of consecutive digits that are also primes. Prime numbers have been described as being the building blocks of the world of numbers and therefore also the building blocks of the reality that we experience.

Twenty three is also a significant number in love. This is because in ancient China, the number two was assigned a feminine role and the number three was given a masculine role. The number 23 then became to symbolize marriage, procreation, and progeny. The number was honored and revered by Chinese mathematicians who recognized that it was made up of two consecutive prime numbers while being a prime number in itself.

The great psychologist and anthropologist Carl Jung also thought that the number 23 was special and defined it as a number of synchronicity. It is a significant number in history as well. Everything from the date that Tokyo's most damaging earthquake to the falling of the Twin Towers on September 11th adds up to the number 23 in terms of numerology.

These are the darker sides of this number 23. In the Kaballah, the Hebrew studies of gematria, the number means severity or judgment. It is associated with apocalypse. In fact, the date to beware of in the future would be the year 2023, according to that system of predictive numerology.

The number 23 is also quite special in science. It seems to turn up quite a bit in nature and it adds up to five, which is also quite common in nature. There are many superstitions and legends that make reference to this number somehow. One good example is that human ova and sperm each contain 23 chromosomes. These two sets of chromosomes must pair up before a new human being can be created in the womb. For this reason, it is also seen as a number of regeneration and eternity.
